Directions for Flat Stanley: 

Please send a picture of yourself and Flat Stanley in your hometown, or the place that you visit. If you can’t get a picture taken with him, please send us a picture post card. Include a letter telling us where you took Flat Stanley while he was in your care. Be creative. The sky is the limit. We welcome brochures or souvenirs to display with Flat Stanley. Please return your Flat Stanley to the student that sent him to you or me at the address included in the email or via email. 

Using the Flat Stanley sent to you, please add things like hair, shoes, shirt, pants, hat, mittens, etc, etc. Use your imagination as to how Stanley should look while in your hometown. We look forward to seeing whatStanley looks like when he returns to our classroom. Please return Stanley by the time stated on his letter to you, if possible. Thank you for letting Stanley visit with you!

Dear Friend or Relative,

As part of our integrated Reading, Writing, Language, Social Studies, and Mathematics programs, the children in my class have read a funny book called Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. The book is about a young boy named Stanley who is accidentally squished "as flat as a pancake" when a bulletin board falls on him.Stanley is very, very flat but otherwise fine. The story goes on to tell how Stanley discovers some real advantages to being flat. He can slide under doors, go down into sidewalk grates, and even fold himself up small enough to fit into an envelope and be mailed toCalifornia for an exciting vacation.

We are sending out plain paper dolls that we callFlat Stanley, and we are sending them off to visit cities all over the WORLD. I have selected you to beFlat Stanley’s "host family" and hope that you will send him back to me after a short visit telling us (my class) something about your city and the exciting thingsFlat Stanley saw or did while he was there. We would also appreciate it if you could let us know approximately how far your city is from mine (Qingdao, China) so that we can calculate the number of miles Flat Stanley has traveled. Of course, Flat Stanley would also appreciate it if you could "dress" him to reflect the season you are in, or an activity that he did, or other clothing that would tell us more about where you live.

What Kinds of Things to Write About

Letters are easier to respond to if there are some common information included. Good content also makes this more of a learning experience. Consider the following:

.:. Location .:. Latitude and longitude and proximity to major cities

.:. Population .:. How many people in your city and in your school?

.:. Special to Your Location .:. Describe favorite local activities, sports, hobbies, and sites of interest and industries

.:. What do you like best about where you are? What would you change?

.:. Wish List .:. What's important to you? What could you do to make things in your school, your neighborhood or even the world better?

.:. What causes or projects are you involved in? Could Flat Stanley contacts elsewhere in the world help you?

.:. Books .:. What books are you reading? What television programs are you watching?

.:. Season Activities .:. Winter sure is different in Northern Ontario and Southern California! What are the differences? What do we have in common?

.:. Consider sending little inclusions with your replies. Local leaves, coins, stickers, post cards and photographs all add to the learning.

Start of the Project

Hello! 

We are starting the Flat Stanley Project here in 2nd grade! We are excited to see our Flat Stanleys with our friends and family from around the world! 

Our Flat Stanleys are going to be meeting the 21st century. Since mail is quite a slow process, we are going to be emailing our Flat Stanleys out, hopefully before November Break.
